Inspectors find food held too warm in Denver and Lititz

Lancaster County food safety inspections, Sept. 28 to Oct. 4: 49 inspections, 13 with violations, and two businesses cited again for problems found last year.

State records show 49 food safety inspections of restaurants, school cafeterias, fair stands, and other food businesses in Lancaster County during the week of Sept. 28. Thirteen businesses were cited for at least one violation. Thirty-six had none.

Each inspection records one visit. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture reminds readers that any inspection is "a 'snapshot' of the day and time of the inspection," and that violations "are often corrected on site prior to the inspector leaving the establishment." Where a report says a problem was fixed during the visit, that is noted below. Every report is public and searchable by business name in the department's inspection database.

Food temperature and condition

Courtyard Cafe on Main, 349 Main St., Denver. Inspected Sept. 28.
Food in the bain-marie, a refrigerated holding unit, was at 45 to 47 degrees. The code requires cold food to be held at 41 degrees or below. The cafe threw the food out voluntarily, and the report says the unit will be evaluated and repaired as needed. The inspector also found that the food-contact surface of a food processor was not smooth or easily cleanable. The cafe took it out of service.

Subway, 64 Broad St., Lititz. Inspected Sept. 29.
Several food items in the bain-marie measured between 42.8 and 50.9 degrees and were thrown out. Sliced tomatoes in the sandwich unit were slimy and moldy, according to the report. Both problems were corrected during the visit.

Food residue on a sink spray nozzle and paint particles and dirt in the handwash sink were both corrected during the visit.
